Doris W Pittman

This Watts hybrid was named after a lovely lady who was an ESA member for decades, her son Galen Pittman serving several terms as ESA President.

Doris was born in 1920. She graduated from the University of La Verne in 1942 and worked as a kindergarten teacher. She died just a few weeks shy of her 100th birthday.

ESA received a call years ago that a member, Harold Watts, had died and his wife wanted to donate his collection of unregistered epiphyllum hybrids. With expectations low, Galen arrived at the Watts home and was amazed to find a carefully tended large collection of plants. All were clearly marked and able to be matched to Mr. Watts meticulously detailed record book.

Galen took the collection to his home to grow out the hybrids. Many were subsequently registered. ‘Doris W. Pittman’ (named for his mother) is one of the finest IMO.
